James Joyce’s
THE DEAD
A SOLO PERFORMANCE adapted and performed by Andrew Heffernan
About THE DEAD
Originally published in 1914, and widely known as one of the greatest short stories ever written, THE DEAD takes place on a single evening, the Feast of the Epiphany, at the home of the elderly spinsters Kate and Julia Morkan in Dublin. Dozens of colorful characters laugh, sing, dance, flirt, clash as the evening progresses, but for one young couple, Gabriel and Greta Conroy, the evening will bring out revelations that will change their lives forever.
Andrew Heffernan’s joyous solo performance of Joyce’s rowdy and timeless masterpiece captures all the colors of Joyce’s beautiful story—funny, petty, combative, heartbreaking, and deeply Irish—in one brisk 75-minute, intermission-free evening. Perfect for theaters looking for flexible material, colleges, museums, universities, and other performance spaces, THE DEAD is a deeply moving, resonant evening of live theater and classic Irish storytelling.
